History and Taoism
WingTsun is an old chinese martial art.
It was originally developed by chinese approximatlely 250 years ago and named after her first student. Her name -WingTsun- means "nice spring". The aim then was, to give civilians -in war times- an effective possibility to defend themselves.
WingTsun stands for the tratition of Taoism.
Tao means "the way" in chinese philosophy. It describes the permanent motion, the growth, the blossoming and the dying.
To achieve the unification with the Tao, individuals have to become like the Tao itself : spontaneous and open, simple and flexible, not strong and hard, not selfish and arrogant.
Defence through WingTsun is like a river, which flows toward the ocean.
If there ia a rock in its way, it still can not be stopped.
Desipte all obstacles it will reach its destination.

What is Escrima?
Escrima Self-defence
Self-defence using blunt or bladed weapons is as old as human civilisation itself. Long before man learned to work with the first metals he was using sticks, clubs or large bones as weapons, with an enormous and immediate increase in his fighting prowess. The development and refinement of hand-held weapons and their effective use over many thousands of years was driven by this existential advantage. It was only with the invention of firearms that this progress more or less came to an end.
In present-day European society self-defence with impact weapons has gained a new importance, as the use of a weapon can easily compensate for disadvantages in strength and body mass but is also subject to very strict legislation.
Under the guiding influence of Grand Master Bill Newman generations of skilled escrimadores have developed a Philippine fighting style into a modern, weapon-based martial art which fully meets the requirements for effective self-defence in western society.
Escrima Mediaeval weapons
The usual training weapon of escrimadores is a rattan stick, however during any exercise those involved should be aware that the stick they are using represents a wide range of cutting and thrusting weapons. In traditional Escrima these are mainly the machete, bolo, dagger and similar bladed weapons. Inspired by Philippine Escrima, which was itself substantially influenced by Spanish weapon techniques, Grand Master Bill Newman researched our own occidental armed combat traditions and discovered a great but almost forgotten heritage which is now almost exclusively confined to the sport of fencing. Grand Master Bill Newman then combined the Escrima principle of transferability between stick techniques and other weapons with the use of traditional European weapon types which nowadays seem more "exotic" to some escrimadores than those of the Far East. Glaive, gladius, buckler or two-handed sword in special classes today's escrimadores in the EWTO are able to train with heavy ancient and mediaeval weapons, which not only gives them an impression of times past but also broadens their technical repertoire through the sheer variety of available training tools.
